Food is one of the wonderful reasons we love to travel. As you eat your way through the culture, you’ll learn about its history, traditions, customs, social hierarchy and politics.

But to do so, you must leave behind the tourist traps and hotel restaurants. and get out on the streets. Search out the street vendors, scour alleys for small, family-owned restaurants and follow the locals.

As budget travelers, we enjoy eating this way because it makes our travel money go further – something we like a lot. But it has other important benefits too, both to us and to the locals we support.

This post by Nomadic Matt has some great tips on eating cheaply while traveling.
