Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo, Japan

If you have never visited Japan, you would likely be very surprised by how popular viewing cherry blossoms is in Japan. In Tokyo, huge crowds of people assemble in all the parks to look at and photograph these magnificent trees.

Families come in large groups and spread picnic blankets, making a day of it. In Tokyo, the short season begins in late March and extends only through the beginning of April. At Japanese web sites, like this one, people track each season so they can be there for the best show.

Bronze Buddha at Kamakura Daibutsu

The construction of the great bronze Buddha statue at the Kōtoku-in temple in Kamakura was begun in 1252 and it  was declared a national treasure in 1958. It is truly an awesome sight.

At about 11.3 meters in height and weighing 121 tons, it is massive in size. The fine details make the Buddha very accessible, even lifelike.

It was originally housed in a great hall and gilded, until the hall was destroyed twice by strong winds. You can pay a fee to climb up inside the statue, known as the Diabutsu, and look out of windows in the back.
