We found termite mounds such as these all over Western Australia. They are seen in fields, in parks, and in the bush. There are a few in the orchard where we are housesitting in Australia.
Termites usually live underground, but if the nest grows too large, they start building above ground. We usually didn’t see many termites on the outside of the mound.
Some of the termite mounds that we found encompassed a tree, presumably so that the termites can chew away without leaving home.
