Ctenosaur Lizard in Tree, Atenas, Costa Rica

Iguana in tree in Costa Rica

Ctenosaur lizards are common in Costa Rica and we have seen them in many different sizes. This one is about four feet long and lives nearby our rented casita in the hills of Atenas, Alajuela.

Ctenosaurs are agile tree climbers and spend some of their time in trees and some on land. Their diet is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, flowers and small insects. They have excellent eyesight and this one moves away with surprising speed when we approach it.
